VRA on path to excellence despite challenges – CEO
Mr Kweku Andoh Awotwe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Volta River Authority (VRA), has challenged the staff to develop their skills to be able to match up with globalization.
He noted that all over the world public sector workers were dwindling due to globalization adding that the only way workers could overcome the challenges was for them to constantly upgrade themselves to be relevant.
Mr Awotwe was speaking at the VRA Division of the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) Quadrennial Delegates Conference at Akuse in the Manya Krobo District on Thursday.
The two-day conference was on the theme “Achieving Public Power Sector Excellence: the Role of the Union”.
He noted that 2012 was very challenging when their crude oil bill shut up but without tariff increase over the last four years.
Mr Awotwe said in spite of the challenges, the company was on its way to excellence and urged the staff to be committed to duty at all times.
“You should ensure that all old behaviours give way to new and always aim at maximizing productivity”.
Dr Yaw Baah, Deputy Secretary General of the GTUC, commended workers of the VRA for their hard work which had enabled the company to contribute significantly to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He told them that they are part of a very important organization and wondered where Ghana would have been at the moment if there VRA was not in existent.
Dr Baah charged the workers to minimize wastage and to ensure that power is produced at affordable price.
He advised all public sector workers to ensure excellence at all times so as not to give any excuse for the sale of public sector assets.
Dr Baah said the trade union movement stands for unity, democracy and social justice and therefore urged workers to always promote peace at their workplaces.
Mr Richard Amparbeng, General Secretary of the PSWU of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), noted that if workers are united they would always overcome whatever obstacles come their way.
“We have been able to survive the attacks and challenges from within and outside the union, in the past few years because we are united”.
Mr Amparbeng therefore urged the staff not to allow any circumstance or personalities to take them out of the Union’ coverage, “stand firm in your resolve to be part of the larger family of workers”.
He urged that Ghanaians be made to pay realistic tariffs to ensure that VRA does not collapse.
