Ghana government sets up special revenue taskforce

President John Dramani Mahama has instituted a special revenue taskforce to monitor and report revenue collection and malpractices that occur at various posts in the country, Mr Mahama Ayariga, Minister for Information and Media Relations has announced.

He said the taskforce members were drawn from various security agencies but declined to mention their names because they would be operating from under cover to unearth activities at collection points.

Mr Ayariga, who announced this on Tuesday during the daily media briefings at the Flagstaff House, Kanda in Accra, added that the move was to plug the loopholes that enabled individuals and organizations to dip their hands into government revenue.

The Information and Media Relations Minister said the formation of the taskforce also formed part of government’s dream to fight against corrupt practices among public officials and various institutions in the public sector.

On the acquisition of new BMW saloon cars for Ministers at various Ministries, Mr Ayariga said he was not aware of that decision as alleged by a section of the media in Accra.

He explained that various organizations and Ministries had their internal generated funds and could use part of it to buy vehicles to improve their fleet, ‘But so far as I am concerned, government or President Mahama for that matter has not ordered any BMW cars to be distributed to Ministers.’

Mr Ayariga appealed to the Media to do diligent cross-checks before carrying out news items as that could end up embarrassing their organizations.
