Cable thief jailed five years
A 26-year-old scrap dealer caught with stolen electrical cables and copper pipes valued at GH¢2,500.00 has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by a Kumasi circuit court.
Yahaya Osman faced charges of stealing, causing unlawful damage and unlawful entry and he pleaded guilty.
Police Chief Inspector James Amekah told the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amo-Yartey that the crime was committed on May 16, at about 1400 hours at Ayigya in Kumasi.
He said Osman cut the cables and pipes in the house of Dr William Addison, a medical officer at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), packed them into a sack, but could not escape with them because of the alertness of people in the neighbourhood.
Someone, who saw Osman enter the house, called to inform Dr Addition on his cellular phone and he in turn sought the assistance of the Police.
The prosecution said the Police arrived on time to save the convict from being lynched by an angry mob that had gathered at the scene.
Osman in his caution statement confessed to the crime.
