Design effective programmes for girl-child education – Director
Mr Johnny Owusu-Boadi, Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, has encouraged school-based girl-child coordinators to develop effective and educative programmes that would make the girls responsive to learning.
They should also include in the programmes other social activities that would inculcate good citizenry in the girls.
Opening a day’s workshop for 25 selected school-based girl-child coordinators and their heads at Obuasi, Mr Owusu-Boadi said girl-child education hinged on effective and productive society since, as expressed by Dr Kwegir Aggrey, “if you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation”.
He, therefore, charged the coordinators to team up with the teachers to bring out the hidden talents in the girls and help in developing them for the benefit of the nation.
“Society is now full of behaviours that are not in agreement with the desired welfare of the girl child. It, therefore, becomes more challenging as teachers to go the extra mile to offer loving care for the girl child,” he said.
Mr Owusu-Boadi commended a girl at Obuasi Methodist Junior High school who won a Presidential Award this year and said; “this should serve as motivation to other girls in this municipality to aim higher in their educational endeavour”
Mrs Hannah A. Adjei, Municipal Girl-Child Coordinator, urged the participants to ensure the formation and monitoring of girls’ activities such as girl-child clubs to expose them to realities of life.
She appealed to them to seek the general welfare of the girls and to see to it that the school environment was girl-child friendly at all times.
Among the topics discussed were Gender-based Violence, Guidance and Counselling, Examination Malpractices and Role of School-based Girl-Child Co-ordinators.
