GTUC to help girls pursue ICT careers

ICT- 1The Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) in Accra, is to stimulate the interest of girls to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Dr Robert Awuah Baffour, Vice President of the University, who disclosed this, said “Women are not born to be nurses, teachers, or midwives while men are born to be engineers”.

He said in order to change this situation, the “GTUC will continue to introduce programmes and incentives that will encourage young women to take interest in ICT…that is why we reward girls who excel in ICT related courses.”

Dr Baffour was addressing a ceremony to mark the International Telecommunications Union Day for Girls in ICT, on Thursday.

The Day is an initiative backed by member states of the International Telecommunications Union, to create a global environment to empower and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in ICT.

Dr Baffour reminded women and young girls that new technologies could assist in their empowerment and a career in ICT could offer them new and exciting challenges.

He said the value of women had been shelved to the background through religion and culture, adding that women have been coded to shy away from areas society consider as male dominated.

Dr Baffour observed that ICT had drastically changed the way individuals, organizations and enterprises do business.

He said if governments, organizations and institutions do not use technology they would not be able to withstand the test of time, and appealed to young women to be part of the global ICT revolution.

Dr Baffour asked parents to cut down the family expenditure and buy computers for their children.

About 110 girls from 10 schools in the Accra metropolis interacted with key personalities who attended the event, toured the University and participated in a quiz.

Participating schools were Harvard Senior High School, Accra Wesley Girls High School, Labone Senior High School, City Business School and Orielly Senior High School, Accra Girls Senior High School, Holy Trinity Cathedral Senior High school and St Mary’s Senior High School.

    Hello!
I am a student of GTUC and an active member of the United Nations Students Association. Thi programme was not organized by GTUC, It was organize by the United Nations Students Association of Ghana Technology University College. GTUC was used as the venue of the event and the association received some form of assistance from the school management. It is only prudent and fair to atleast mention the name of the association.
    Thank you!
