Faith Montessori students use plastic bottles to manufacture sofa chair

Four students of Faith Montessori School in Accra have displayed a durable sofa which the built using only plastic waste bottles.

The group said through consistent research, they had been able to develop ways of using plastic bottles to produce beds and other household furniture which have proven to be very durable.

Masters Delali Quarcoo, Maxwell Asare, Michael Asare and Titus Kalu, all in form one, said this to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday during the schools science and technology fair in Accra.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Master Delali said they were touched by the huge plastic waste littered around the cities.

He said as young scientists it was important to appreciate problems militating against social and economic progress of the society and to find ways of solving them.

Master Delali said plastic waste had become a national canker that called for commitment of both the young and old to blend ideas to find a lasting solution to the concern.

Their display was essentially the use of 248 Voltaic bottles for the manufacture of a single sofa chair.

Mrs Emma Amoo-Gottfried, Co-Founder and Directress of Faith Montessori School, said the science fair was an opportunity for the students to embark on self investigations using scientific research methods and techniques learnt in class.

“This distinctive opportunity significantly contributes to the education of our students, improves their self-esteem and general well-being and develops a general positive attitude”, she said.

Mrs Amoo-Gottfried said through the fair, pupils and students had become acutely aware of the science around them and to research into phenomena of their interest.
