Ghana Fire Service suspects foul play in death of student

Ghana FireThe Sunyani Directorate of Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) suspects foul play in the death of Samuel Kwarteng 25, a student of the Kumasi campus of University of Education, Winneba.

The deceased was burnt to death at Bakoniaba, a suburb at Sunyani last Thursday.

Mr Thomas Kofi Dzah, Municipal Operations Commander of GNFS in an interview with Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on Tuesday said: “The Criminal Investigations Department of Ghana Police Service was invited to the scene since we suspected a foul play in the incident.”

He said during investigations it was observed that the electricity in the house had been disconnected by the Electricity Company of Ghana since last year and there was no trace of a candle in the room.

Mr Dzah said there was a bottle of kerosene and an empty matches box found at an uncompleted house behind the window of the deceased from where the fire started.

He said the GNFS received a phone called at dawn on Thursday, May, 23 this year that a bedroom at the ground floor of a two-storey building was being gutted by fire.

Mr Dzah said personnel from the Directorate rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control, but the charred body of Kwarteng was found at the entrance of his room.

He said the corpse had been deposited at the Sunyani Government Hospital mortuary pending autopsy.
