GWCL pays GH¢4.3m as compensation for water projects

cediMr Kwaku Godwin Dovlo, the Managing Director (MD) of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), on Wednesday told the Judgement Debt Commission that compensation was paid in acquiring the Barekese land for the water works.

He said an amount of GH¢4,301,562.82 was paid to the 12 claimants of the Barakese land in the Ashanti Region even though it was paid in installments.

Mr Dovlo said 50 per cent of the amount was paid through the claimants’ solicitor.

Justice Yaw-Apau, the Commissioner of Judgement Debt, however, urged the MD of GWCL to furnish the Commission with the necessary documents to prove that some of the money was indeed paid through the solicitor of the 12 claimants of the land.

Mr Bentsil Enchil, Head, Lands Valuation Division of Lands Commission, confirmed to the Commission that the compensation was paid to the Barekese land owners, excluding the Owabi land owners.

Mr Lesley Akrong, Director for Domestic Banking at the Bank of Ghana gave a break down to the commission on how the compensation was paid.

He said, GH¢2,150,781.83 was paid in January 15, 2008, the second instalment of GH¢1,150, 78.46 was paid on January 5, 2009 and the third instalment of GH¢1,000,000 was paid on March 24, 2009.
