NGO announces €40m anti-poverty project in Ghana
A 40-million Euro Project to eliminate poverty in rural communities in the Brong-Ahafo Region is being implemented by the New Directions Foundation (NDF) Limited; a United Kingdom based Non-Governmental Organisation with Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF).
The project, “Brong-Ahafo Green Fund for Capital Enterprise”, would in addition, help improve health care, education, transport, energy and sustainable agriculture with an expected beneficiary of 7,000 rural residents.
It is an initiative of a Sunyani-based NGO, who are the implementing agency.
Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, Chief Executive Officer of GLOMEF disclosed when a 10-member delegation of the NGO paid a courtesy call on Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister to brief him on the project in Sunyani on Wednesday.
Mr Ahenu explained that the project, which would be piloted in 15 communities in three selected districts for five years, would be subjected to review to determine its sustainability.
The beneficiary communities are Odumase, Chiraa, Nsoatre, Dumasua and Fiapre in the Sunyani West District, Sunyani, Abesim, New Dormaa, Kotokrom and Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality and Kintampo, Babatokuma, Kunsu, Kraboso and Ayima in the Kintampo North Municipality.
Mr Ahenu said a company would be established by the Berlin Technology Hub, a German company to manufacture low cost but high efficiency solar energy bulbs to supply power to beneficiary communities which had no electricity.
He said the project, expected to begin in August this year, would in addition provide economic opportunities for women in the communities to transform their lives.
Mr Ahenu said the beneficiary assemblies were yet to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the NGO for the project to begin and called for maximum support from the Government and all stakeholders to ensure its success.
Mr Adjei noted that eliminating poverty through job creation was not the sole responsibility of the Government and appreciated efforts by some NGOs towards accelerated national development.
He called on the selected districts to ensure that they gave their maximum support to make the project’s implementation successful.
