Traders happy as good weather helps yields

Foodstuffs sellers at the Agbogbloshie market are happy with the current rains, which they described as “good weather” as it has enabled farmers to produce enough food.

Many of the sellers said good rains have brought more farm produce, although most of these foodstuffs are left to go waste on the farms because the farmers are unable to preserve them.

A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that as a result of the good weather, prices of some foodstuffs are on the decline.

Mrs Sarah Annor, a tomatoes seller at the market, said some few months ago one small paint bucket of tomatoes was being sold for between GH¢8.00 and GH¢10.00 but today it is selling at GH¢5.00 and the ones on the tray is going for GH¢1.00.

Madam Cecilia Wiafe, an onion seller, said the prices of onion have also seen some changes and in quantity as compare with some months ago.

“A box of onion is now selling at GH¢100.00, but during the dry season it shot up to GH¢50.00 this is a good venture since am not running at a loss,” she said.

Madam Joana Fosu a plantain and cassava seller said the price of the two commodities over the past two months have been a headache to both sellers and consumers since it has become too expensive even at the farms.

She said a small quantity of plantain is sold at Ghc5.00 and the bigger ones, Ghc10.00.

Miss Adjoa Serwaa, a garden eggs and okro seller at the market said prices of the two commodities have reduced and its in abundance but consumers are not buying as they were expecting, saying that, it is really disturbing them.

Madam Kafui Dzidzor, a consumer who spoke to the GNA, said she can now buy the quantity of tomatoes and the necessary ingredients she needs for meals at a lesser price.

“During the dry season I have to buy more tin tomatoes to add up to the small quantity of fresh tomatoes before I can get my stew, but now the situation has changed and I hope it lasts longer”, she said.
