Waterville to refund monies to State as Amidu wins case
The Supreme Court on Friday directed Waterville Holdings Limited to refund to the state monies obtained illegally through contracts.
The court gave the directive indicating that the agreement has not been put before parliament and is inconsistent with the law of the state.
The Court gave the directive following arguments before it by former Attorney General Martin Amidu that neither Waterville nor businessman Alfred Agbesie Woyome, had a valid contract with the state.
The judges granted some of the reliefs out of 14 reliefs sought by the former Attorney General.
The court stayed verdict on parts of the reliefs concerning Mr Woyome because those were the subject of another matter yet to be determined at the High Court.
The judges commended Martin Amidu for his efforts to protect the public purse by making sure that monies illegally paid companies were retrieved.
Justice Jones Dotse, one of the judges seating on the case, said a time has come for lawyers in trial cases to conduct themselves according to the ethics of the profession.
He said even though lawyers hold it a duty to their clients, their conducts and actions should conform to the laws of the state.
He said some of the conducts of lawyers for the defendants were referred to the General Legal Council for appropriate action.
