KMA to assist traders with GH¢200,000 after fire outbreak
The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Kojo Bonsu, has announced a GH¢200,000.00 financial support by the assembly to aid victims of last Sunday’s Central Market fire disaster.
Property running into thousands of Cedis was completely ravaged by the fire that swept through parts of the market (second hand clothing section).
Mr Bonsu told a media briefing that security would be beefed up and that they would ensure all trading activities at the market end daily at exactly 1800 hours.
He has already met the stakeholders to see how best they could put up temporary structures to carry out their trade as well as the way forward.
He said as part of a long term solution to stop the recurring fires and other challenges, the market is to be modernized. Plans for this are far advanced, adding that, for the meantime, the assembly would allow the construction of temporary structures to save traders from the pain and discomfort.
Mr Bonsu vowed to make public a report on the fire outbreak and present it to the government for any possible assistance to the victims and cautioned the traders to avoid illegal electrical connections and any other activity, which is likely to trigger a fire.
He said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and that the appropriate institutions are doing everything to get to the bottom of it.
He gave high marks to the Ghana National Fire Service, the military and the police, for battling the fire to stop its spread.
