Tema station stinks – Drivers, traders complain
Drivers and traders at the Tema Station as well as other commuters on Monday shared their grievances about the current sanitation situation at the Station.
The stench at the station is terrible resulting in traders, drivers and commuters spitting all over the place, with its attendant spread of communicable diseases very plausible.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Gilbert Mensah, a driver at the Station expressed his displeasure at the delays in carting refuse from the station.
According to him, the refuse was usually disposed off weekly, however, the refuse truck has not been consistent lately, adding that, the refuse truck’s last visit to the station was on Saturday, and emptied only one container leaving two others, which were filled to the brim.
“The drivers are made to pay a parking fee of GHc 1.50 daily for the upkeep of the station but the place is not well- kept”, Mensah added.
Patricia Obada, a trader at the station, who sells her wares close to the dump, complained that the presence of the refuse makes it difficult to sell her food, despite the traders paying a fee of 30 pesewas daily, before being allowed to trade at the station.
She explained that the fee was to ensure that the station was clean at all times, however the current situation raises questions about how the station was maintained.
Though the GNA visited the New Tema Station Welfare Office of the GPRTU of the Ghana Trades Union Congress to seek audience with its officials, no official was at post at the time of the visit.
