Hospital offers free diabetes screening
The Yeboah Hospital, a leading diabetic and endocrinology centre at East Legon, over the weekend offered free diabetes screening to about 150 people.
Dr Asumani Yeboah, an Endocrinologist and Diabetic Specialist who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, told the Ghana News Agency that the screening formed part of the social responsibilities of the health facility.
The programme was also to create diabetes awareness among the people to curb its alarming spread in the country.
According to Dr Asumani Yeboah, diabetes is a disease of the pancreas which is as a result of high blood sugar levels and that it is detected when one had increased urination, fatigue and tiredness, weight loss despite increase of appetite, blurred vision and delayed healing of wounds.
During the screening people with stomach ulcers were diagnosed.
Dr Asumani Yeboah said the risk complications of diabetic patients were stroke, amputation, blindness, heart failure, weak kidneys, nerve damage and erectile dysfunction, saying; “one needs to take health screening very seriously for the early detection of sicknesses.”
He advised Ghanaians to exercise regularly and stick to healthy lifestyles by eating fruits and vegetables and reduce the intake of fatty foods.
