Court jails trader for child theft
A 21-year old trader, Mary Nyamekey, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing a child.
She pleaded guilty before a Takoradi Circuit Court presided over by Mr Charles Bamfo Nimako.
Nyamekey was arrested on Monday, June 24 at Kwesiminstim, near Takoradi, for stealing a baby boy.
The prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Richard Boatey, told the court that the mother of the child is Gladys Yamson, 18, who just completed Assaikai Methodist Junior High School.
DSP Boatey said the convict loitered around the maternity home of Jemima Clinic at Anaji, where the baby was delivered and pretended as if she was caressing the baby to sleep when the mother attended to nature’s call, and bolted with the child.
He said police apprehended the convict at Kwesimintsim upon a tip-off and was arraigned.
