Koforidua court convicts 26 drivers
Twenty six drivers of rickety vehicles in Koforidua were convicted to a total fine of GH¢9,620.00 by a Koforidua Circuit Court.
Their conviction followed an exercise conducted by the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the police last week on the major routes, including the Koforidua-Kumasi, Mamfe, Somanya and Ho, Suhum and Accra, to check road worthiness of vehicles.
In all 38 drivers were arrested for offences, such as not having road worthy certificates, insurance, tail and head lights, overloading of both passengers and goods, which police described as threat to road safety.
According to Police Chief Superintendent Samuel Tetteh, the Regional MTTU Commander, the court also ordered the defaulters to correct the defects on their vehicles within two weeks before putting them on the road or face stiffer punishments.
He said the exercise would be sustained and urged drivers to ensure the safety of lives on the roads by doing the right thing.
