Ashanti Police arrests three phone snatchers
The Ashanti Regional Police Command on Sunday, July 8, arrested three persons believed to be part of a mobile phone snatching gang operating in the Metropolis.
Thirty assorted mobile phones, phone chargers, two cameras and their accessories, suspected to have been stolen, were seized from them when they were picked up from their hide-out at Bantama in Kumasi upon a tip-off.
Yahaha Haruna, 30, Samuel Appiah, 23 and Stephen Oppong, 18 are in the custody of the police and are assisting in investigations.
This was contained in a release signed by ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, the Public Affairs Unit Officer, a copy of which was made available to the Ghana News Agency.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects are experts in mobile phone stealing and even took advantage of last Sunday’s “Music-Music” programme, organized by TV3 at Obuasi and snatched a number of mobile phones from unsuspecting fans.
Haruna, an alleged kingpin in phone snatching business engages young people to steal phones for him to sell, the release stated.
All three have admitted the offence and the police is appealing to victims to come and identify the thieves and their phones.
