FIFA U-20: France ends Ghana’s run at semis
Ghana’s Black Satellite’s adventure at the FIFA U-20 World Cup was halted by France after a 1-2 defeat in the semi finals meeting in Turkey, on Wednesday.
Ghana hoped to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2009, but it was French’s Florian Thauvin who scored twice to lead the Europeans to their first final in their history.
A goal in either half were all the French needed to brush aside the Black Satellites, and set a date with the winner of the Iraq-Uruguay tie in the finals later in the week.
Thauvin scored first despite Frank Acheampong posing the first threat at goal in the early minutes. After Thauvin, Paul Pobga, Jean Bahebeck all missed from close targets for France, Ebenezer Assifuah drew parity for the Satellites once the second session got underway.
Ghana’s goalkeeper, Eric Antwi was to thank when he reorganized his defence to stem the tide of the attack moments on.
But soon, a silky exchange ensued between Bahebeck and Thauvin, before the former slotted home his second.
A second yellow card for Samuel Umtiti meant the winners played the last few minutes with a man less after he picked a second yellow card.
Ghana will compete for bronze against Iraq
