Builsa South rejects DCE nominee

voterPresident John Mahama’s Nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Builsa South District, Mr Norbert Awulley, was on Tuesday rejected by members of the assembly at a special emergency meeting held at Fumbisi by the District Assembly.

The rejection of Mr Awulley, brings to two, the number of the President’s nominees rejected within one week in the region.

Earlier last Friday, Mr Thomas Adda Dalu, the President’s nominee for the Kassena-Nankana West District suffered similar fate when he failed to win the support of the members of the assembly to be confirmed outright.

Despite Mr Awulley’s sober appeal to the members to consider his nomination, he pulled 12 votes out of 27 members present, constituting 44 per cent of votes cast. He thus failed to secure the two thirds majority votes needed to be confirmed.

Mr Azu Bosco, Deputy Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, who supervised the voting, educated members of the assembly on the exercise and said the nominee required two thirds of votes of total members present to be confirmed or 50 per cent of total votes cast plus one to get a second chance for confirmation after 10 days.

Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Upper East Region Minister, in a message urged members to put aside partisanship and confirm the nominee to enable him (nominee) to bring the needed development to the area, considering the fact that the district was new and needed to develop.

Mr Ayepai Norbert, Assembly Man for Geningsa Electoral Area, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency, said the reason why the nominee was rejected was due to his inability to account for development funds earmarked for the development of the area.

He said motor bikes meant for the assembly members were still not registered for them to use in their routine community work.

He indicated that even though he was a native, he neglected the development of the area whilst acting from Builsa North. “He failed to make follow ups on the payment of extra gratia of past assembly members”, he said.

He called on the President to nominate a more vibrant person who could bring development to the area.
