Ghana loses GH¢7.5m cocoa revenue in 2012 due to black pod disease – Report

Ghana is said to have lost a revenue of about GH¢7.5 million in 2012 on cocoa due to the black pod disease which affected the crop.

According to  the Ghana Cocoa Board, the country is losing about 25% of its annual cocoa output to the black pod disease, reports the Graphic Business newspaper citing COCOBOD’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Anthony Fofie.

According to the news report, about 212,500 metric tonnes of cocoa beans which is 25% of the 850,000 metric tonnes was lost to the disease in 2012.

The country is reportedly earning an average of GH¢3 billion from cocoa related exports annually.
