Minister inaugurates taskforce to collate labour statistics
Mr Nii Armah Ashitey, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, has inaugurated a 13-member taskforce on Labour Market Information System (LMIS) to help provide statistics on employment, unemployment and industrial accidents.
Mr Ashitey said unemployment has become a global crisis and the LMIS would provide statistics on the rate of employment and help link the job seekers to job providers and thereby reduce unemployment.
Mr Ashitey said it is the anticipation of the Ministry that the private sector and other collaborators would play major roles in supporting the implementation of the LMIS.
The terms of reference of the Task Force are to identify indicators to be collected on labour statistics, co-ordinate the activities of all institutions, which collect statistics related to the labour market, identify new graduates of various levels of education and institutions providing employable skills.
Mr Ashitey tasked the force to do a diligent job, set clear time lines and assist in providing the relevant statistics to help in solving the unemployment problem.
Mr Eugene Korletey, Deputy Chief Labour Officer at the Labour Department, on behalf of the Chairperson of the Task Force, assured the Minister of their commitment to work assiduously to achieve the objectives of the Task Force.
The members of the committee are Ms Elizabeth Hagan and Mr Eugene Korletey from the Labour Department, Dr Shaibu Gariba from the Management Development and Productivity Institute, Mr Daniel Kattah, Mr Ernest Berko, Mr Peter Antwi and Ms Mary-Anne Addo from the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
The rest are Mr Stephen Amponsah from National Vocational and Training Institute, Mr Adjei Boye from the Department of Factories Inspectorate, Mr Jerry Odotei from the National Department Planning Commission, Mr Johnson Kagya Owusu from the Ghana Statistical Service, Mr Yaw Arphul from the Ministry of Health and Nana Akrasi Sarpong from the Ministry of Trade and Industries.
