Group presses on government over women’s rights

The Gender Communication Network (GCN), has expressed concern over lapses in constitutional and legal provisions in protecting women’s rights and called on government to demonstrate commitment to solve the problem.

GCN therefore called on the government to take steps to ensure that all conventions and protocols pertaining to women’s rights are fully implemented.

The network made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of a three-day training workshop for media personnel organised by the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre in Accra.

The communiqué copied to Ghana News Agency on Wednesday identified women as the least represented as well as marginalised in both government and private employment circles.

“We draw government’s attention to its constitutional obligation to ensure that all persons have the right to equal educational opportunities and facilities, with a view of achieving a full realisation of that right,” the communiqué said.

The communiqué called on the government to ensure women’s rights are fully promoted and protected and their equal rights to training and promotion are guaranteed without any impediment from any person for their full participation in the development of Ghana.

It said parliament ought to enact without further delay legislation on property rights of spouses on dissolution of marriage in line with Article 22 (2) of the 1992 Constitution.

The GCN is expected to collaborate with civil society organisations, the National Commission for Civic Education and traditional rulers to educate the public on pertinent issues on gender and women’s rights in Ghana.

It will undertake scientific research and investigate key issues affecting gender, particularly on women’s rights.
