Motor riders educated on road safety
The Greater Accra Regional branch of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has organised an education forum on road safety for motor riders and driver unions at Ada as part of activities to commemorate the Asafotufiami Festival.
A statement signed by Mr Daniel Hardy Wuaku, Regional Manager of NRSC, on Tuesday said even though the use of motorcycles for commercial purpose was illegal, it was a brisk business at Ada, hence the educational programme to promote safety, especially during the festive period.
It said the riders were advised on the need to wear helmets at all times in addition to a reflective and bright coloured attire, and cautioned against the practice of picking more than one person during their operations”, it said.
According to the statement, certificates of participation were presented to the riders to serve as constant reminders of good road use practices.
The statement said the Commission also embarked on a community road safety education through video shows and one-on-one interactions at vantage points on the benefits of observing good road safety practices.
It also distributed over 2000 educational handbills with messages ranging from pedestrian and driver safety, observing road traffic rules as well as signs and markings.
It said the educational campaign was successful as the Ada District Motor Transport Traffic Unit of the Ghana Police Service had indicated that there was no fatality during the festival.
