Christian Council Ghana calls for national cohesion

CrowdThe Christian Council of Ghana on Tuesday called for peace and national cohesion and said all Ghanaians needed to rise above partisan affiliations, religious segregation and ethnic differences and put Ghana first.

The Council said in a statement which was read by the Council’s General Secretary, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong that all citizens needed to be vigilant and not to be drawn by promises by any individual or group.

It called for change in psyche, attitude and behaviour that made Ghana and her development supreme in all ways and in all things and a change that put the poor and vulnerable first.

It further asked for a change that put the larger interest of Ghanaians first rather than the interest of any persons or group of persons.

The statement appealed to all Ghanaians to uphold the peace and unity that had existed over the years.

It mentioned the toil of the nation’s forefathers and the blood which was shed to establish Ghana and that it was the sacrifices of the pioneers that united the people from all walks of life.

The statement said these sacrifices sought to foster tribal, ethnic and national cohesion and promote a nation with one people and a single destiny.

It urged Ghanaians to be patriotic, utilising their God given gifts of mind and strength to develop the nation while striving to protect and preserve the nation’s heritage.

According to the statement the sacrifices made over the decades were not for any political party, ethnic group or tribe or religious group, but a unique action that had given Ghana the regional and global recognition and seen as a beacon of hope on the continent.

“Unfortunately, we now find ourselves in a country where the seeming division of the two major political parties seems to submerge the allegiance of the citizenry to their motherland,” it said.

The Council appealed to Ghanaians to seek and pursue peace, knowing that Ghana had been put to the test and that the whole world was watching to see how the country would survive the test of time.
