The Western Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Mr. Emmanuel Papa Assan has urged government to provide it with logistics and funds to implement the youth action plan.

He said the NYA is cash-strapped and cannot carry out its mandate effectively.

Mr. Assan disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sekondi, on Monday, to mark the International Youth Day which is observed on August 12.

This year’s celebration is on the theme, “Youth Migration; Moving Development Forward.”

He said the youth should be ready to move and serve in any sector of the economy, whether rural or urban, and asked government and the District Assemblies to fashion out development activities such as job creation and entrepreneurship to address some of the problems confronting the youth.

Mr. Assan said most of the unemployed graduates and youth were not ready to accept postings or jobs in remote parts of the country, thus, creating more unemployment problems, which does not auger well for the nation.

The Director said the youth must venture into Agriculture since the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) was ready to lend the required support to them, and advised parents to involve their children in the decision making process and also instill the virtues of hard-work, honesty and patriotism in them to spearhead the nation’s development.

He re-echoed the UN Secretary General’s message on the day, which urged policy makers to reflect on measures to optimally manage migration and protect the vulnerable.

Mr. Assan maintained that government, in collaboration with the NYA, will examine the issue of migration and champion the rights of the vulnerable and marginalised migrant young people.

He used the occasion to commend youth organizations and agencies in the Western Region for living up to expectation and appealed to them to continue using the proper channels of communication to address their needs.
