Committee finalizing report on Eastern University

The Committee tasked to undertake feasibility studies for the establishment of the Eastern University would soon present its report to the President for consideration.

Mr Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, a Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, who announced this at the daily media briefings on Wednesday in Accra, said the Committee was finalising its report for presentation to the President and after that the project would start.

Mr Kwakye-Ofosu said the Committee was contacting traditional rulers to ensure unimpeded access to land, and also considering sources of funding for the project, and the development of a curriculum.

“The Committee has taken note of several ideas and suggestions to feed into a cohesive plan geared towards enhancing tertiary education in the country,” the Deputy Minister said.

Mr Kwakye-Ofosu said unlike the University of Energy and Natural Resources and the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Brong-Ahafo and the Volta Regions, which focuses on energy-related and health issues respectively, the Eastern University was expected to address specific human resource concerns.

On the focus of the Eastern University, the Deputy Minister said the Committee would provide a clear-cut road map as to what would be entailed in the academic programme.

Mr. Kwakye-Ofosu, however, said that the course content of the new public university would deepen studies in areas which would spur the country on to boost the middle-income status.

He said that the Government has an unsurpassed track record of establishing tertiary institutions and would once again demonstrate that in the coming months.

President John Mahama in April this year inaugurated a 12-member taskforce to oversee the early completion of the Eastern University, which was a major manifesto issue of the NDC Government.

The Eastern Region University would have campuses at Donkorkrom, Somanya and other places to be determined by the taskforce.
