IGP warns police officers to avoid politics

Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, Inspector General of Police (IGP), on Tuesday warned Police officers to stay away from partisan politics as Ghanaians wait for the Supreme Court verdict on the 2012 Presidential election petition.
He said officers, who meddle in partisan politics, does so at their own risk because the Police administration would not compromise on unethical practices.
Mr Alhassan gave the warning when he addressed more than 400 Police officers at a parade in Sunyani, as part of his one-day familiarization visit to the Brong-Ahafo Region.
He reminded them that it was the core mandate of the Police to protect lives and properties and so they must remain neutral and unbiased in the performance of their duties.

The IGP entreated the officers to strictly adhere to operational guidelines and be more proactive and responsive to duty.
Mr Alhassan told the officers to allow loyalty and professionalism to be their hallmark and endeavour to ensure that they discharge their duties without favour and partisan considerations.

He said even though some of the many problems, especially that of accommodation, in the service seemed insurmountable, the Police administration is currently undertaking “self-help projects” to put up new bungalows for personnel.
Mr Alhassan said the issue of sanitation was a prime concern, saying, the Police administration was in discussions with some sanitation companies to help keep the barracks clean.
He said the administration was working to provide bore holes for officers stationed at deprived communities and that it intends constructing three boreholes in every region.
Mr Alhassan advised the officers to live above reproach and to sensitize their relatives and friends on the need to maintain peace in the country.
