Kantanmanto fire victims say happy with government’s assistance

FireMr Daniel Adu, Vice Chairman, Kantamanto Traders Association, has said it was not true that their members affected by the recent fires outbreak at the market were unhappy with the government’s assistance to them.

He said the executives of the Association had not granted any interview on the issue and attributed those statements to some individuals.

Mr Adu said this when Ms Rachel Nana Adwoa Akpoh, Deputy Minister of Children, Gender and Social Protection, visited the market to check on progress of registration of the fire victims.

The bank registration, being done by Stanbic Bank, would enable the traders to be credited with the amount due them.

Traders who do not have accounts with Stanbic Bank are required to furnish the registration personnel with their names and account numbers.

He said the Association was working with the Gender Ministry on the possibility of paying the President a visit in order to express their appreciation.

Ms Akpoh said 7,381 affected people would be registered and that it was not each affected person would be given GH¢200, adding that the least amount to be given out to any affected person was GH¢250.

She said Stanbic Bank was given the contract to register the affected traders because it was the first bank to come to the aid of the affected traders by writing off their loans.

She appealed to other financial institutions to assist the affected traders by giving them flexible loan facilities.
