Sir John asks party supporters to be calm
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday appealed to its irate supporters across the country not to engage in any untoward act to disturb the peace of the nation.
“As true believers of rule of law and democracy, I urge all to allow the process of the law to take its normal course,” Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, NPP General Secretary, told the women wing of the party who gathered at the party headquarters.
The women supporters, clad in red, expressed sorrow and wailed for two leading NPP functionaries, who have been summoned to appear before the Supreme Court judges on Wednesday August 14.
The summons, dated August 9, 2013 was jointly signed by the Presiding Judge of the nine-member panel hearing the Presidential Election Petition, Justice William Atuguba, and James Mensah, Registrar of the Supreme Court
The two summoned – Mr Owusu Afriyie and Mr Hopeson Adorye, a member of the NPP Communications team, are to appear before the Court over contemptuous comments.
The women supporters called on the Judges to tamper justice with mercy, adding that Mr Owusu-Afriyie was one of the pillars of the party and incarcerating him at this point in time would be dangerous for the country’s democratic development.
Mr Owusu-Afriyie commended the women and other party supporters for the support but urged them to exercise restraint.
“I have taken notice of the massive show of support from the rank and file of the Great NPP across the length and breadth of the country ever since the news of my summons to the Supreme Court was published.
“I wish to thank all of our teeming supporters. I appreciate the diverse ways through which they have shown solidarity and support.
“However, I wish to call on all supporters to remain calm and I also plead with all supporters without accreditation to stay off the Court’s premises to avoid unnecessary confrontation with the security agencies”.
