Ghana’s sole athlete at World Athletics Championships bids farewell

IAAFGhana bid farewell to the World Athletics Championship underway in Moscow, Russia after Janet Amponsah failed to go past the 200m heats.

Amponsah, the nation’s torchbearer for the global championship finished bottom (7th position) in the heats of Thursday morning with a time of 24.07s.

The 20-year old failed to make the cut from a line-up that included no major big names, with a time below the 23.41s she made at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain last July.

American Kimberlyn Duncan emerged winner with a time of 22.88s, Johanna Danois of France – 23.00 and Hanna-Maari Latvala of Finland – 23.07s finished in the top three and also qualify automatically for the semis.

Gloria Hooper (Italy) – 23.10s, Ana Claudia Silva (Brazil) – 23-31s and Moa Hjelmer (Sweden) -23.33s finished in that order.

The poor finish by the Police Officer ends Ghana’s hope at the championship that climaxes on Sunday in the Russian capital.
