Court fines two fishermen for engaging in illegal fishing
Two fishermen, Kojo Annan, 25, and Abraham Mensah, 30, were on Wednesday fined GH¢300 each by a Takoradi Circuit Court or in default serve six months imprisonment for engaging in illegal fishing.
They pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Fuseini Yakubu told the court presided over by Mr. Kwesi Boakye that the complainant was the Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of fisheries.
He said on August 3, the complaint had a tip-off that some fishermen had returned from a fishing expedition with generators and lights at the Albert Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour at Sekondi and arrested them.
The prosecution said Mensah claimed ownership of a canoe found with cables, a bulb which had a voltage exceeding 500 Watts and some fresh fish.
He added that Annan was also arrested by the complainant because a search conducted on his canoe revealed a generator, four cables and bulbs with a voltage exceeding 500 Watts.
