Catholic Bishop bemoans loss of lives in Egypt

Most Reverend Paul Bemile, Catholic Bishop of Wa, has bemoaned the ongoing destruction and loss of lives in Egypt through political violence.

He bemoaned the bombing of churches and mosques in Egypt and appealed to the youth to resist any form of temptation to engage in violence in Ghana.

“Ghanaians must not engage themselves in likewise manner regardless of whatever the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment may be,” Bishop Bemile said.

Bishop Bemile was addressing members of the Upper West Regional Satellite Peace Centre (SPC) at a meeting with regional executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Wa.

The meeting was to deliberate on sustaining the peace after the announcement of the verdict on the 2012 Election petition on August 29 by the Supreme Court.

He said the Catholic Church would organise a peace-walk in Wa on August 24 to sensitize the people to maintain peace to enhance development.

Alhaji Issahaku Malik, Chairman of the NDC, assured people in the region that the NDC had chosen the path of peace and would abide by it after the Supreme Court judgment.

He challenged Ghanaians to practically demonstrate peace instead of just preaching it.

Mr Hafiz Bin Salih, Vice Chairman of the NPP, said the party trusted the Supreme Court and that was the reason for which it sought justice through the court.

He commended the SPC for organizing the meeting to bring the executives of the two parties together, describing it as a sign of unity.

Mr Salih said the peace loving nature of the people would be put to test after the Supreme Court verdict, saying: “The region is the hub of peace in Ghana,” and urged others to emulate that example.

Father Nuolabong Aloysius, Coordinator of the SPC, urged supporters of the two parties to emulate the example of their leadership.
