Catholic University opens GH¢1.8m ultra-modern hostel

Professor James Hawkins Ephraim, Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG), on Friday inaugurated an ultra-modern hostel facility constructed at the cost of GH¢1.8 million.

Situated on the University’s campus at Fiapre, near Sunyani, the three storey hostel comprised 232 rooms with the capacity to accommodate 928 out of the 5,500 students expected to be admitted into the University this academic year.

Professor Ephraim explained that the University, had since its establishment in 2002, been striving to put up decent accommodation for students and staff to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

He said construction works on the facility started in 2008, but was abandoned as a result of financial challenges, which compelled the University’s authorities to source a term facility.

Prof. Hawkins expressed appreciation to the Ghana Commercial Bank, especially and all those who contributed in diverse ways for the completion of the hostel.

The CUCG established in 2002 as an affiliate college of the University of Ghana, started with only 15 students in 2003 but can now boast of 4,454 students offering programmes in BSC Economics and Business Administration, BSC Public Health and Allied Sciences, BA Hons in Religious Studies and Bachelor of Education with 196 staff.

In addition, the university, also affiliate of the University of Cape Coast, offers programmes in Basic Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma in Education, BSCs Computer Science, Actuarial Sciences, Mathematics with Economics and Mathematics with Finance.
