NCCE organises peace forum for parties
The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has organized a forum at Wa to sensitize political party activists and relevant groups on the need to respect the Supreme Court verdict on the 2012 Presidential Election petition.
The forum is the first in the series being organized in the Upper West Region prior to the announcement of the verdict.
The forums, which are being sponsored by STAR Ghana, would focus on the Public Order Act and Political Tolerance.
Mr Hussein Haruna, Regional Director of NCCE, who spoke on Political Tolerance at the forum on Thursday, said presidential electoral disputes could only be resolved by the Supreme Court and, therefore, the process, which started in that court, should be allowed to end smoothly.
“Conflicts are part of every society and they are only bad when they turn violent,” he said.
He urged supporters of the party that would emerge victorious to celebrate with unity in mind as the country could not develop along polarized lines.
The contribution of every citizen, he noted, was vital for the development of the nation.
He called on all Ghanaians to encourage multi-party democracy to thrive for their liberties to be guaranteed.
Mr Steven Tetteh, Wa Municipal Police Commander, who took the participants through the Public Order Law, warned that the police would never renege in their efforts to ensure that peace prevailed after the announcement of the verdict.
Mr Sumani Kassim, Wa Municipal Director of the NCCE, urged the participants to take the peace initiatives seriously in order to promote national cohesion and unity for development of the country.
Activists of both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party, who participated in the event, pledged their support to maintain the peace.
As part of the programme, the Wa Municipal Directorate of the Commission screened a documentary on the Rwanda genocide of 1994 at Fongu, a community in the municipality.
