Ghana Armed Forces Cadet Corps ends camp
The Ghana Armed Forces Cadet Corps (GAFCC), has ended Proficiency Camp 2013, at Asuansi Technical Institute in the Central Region, aimed at instilling in the young Ghanaian the spirit of fidelity to others.
The event dubbed: “Exercise guiding light,” was also focused on maintaining social vice- free youth through multi-faceted cadet corps programme, which is physically and mentally challenging but rewarding.
The camp on the theme: “Ready and willing sure to deliver,” prepared the cadets towards achieving success with a spirit of service to government, country and community.
Mr Samuel Osei Asare, Volunteer Captain, Chief Staff Officer and Officer in charge Of the GAFCC, who made this known to Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview said the new vision of the cadet corps “is to build a disciplined organisation in schools with loyal, knowledgeable, responsible, resourceful, confident and persevering young citizens who are valued within their community by providing them, within a military framework, safe, enjoyable and challenging opportunities”.
He said the youth require a conducive environment for their personal development and as such must take keen interest in the peace building and maintenance process.
“It is for this reason that I wish to sensitise the youth especially cadets on the need to be ambassadors for championing the course of peace and the need for us all to co-exist as Ghanaians irrespective of ethnicity, religion, colour, creed or political affiliation”.
Mr Asare appealed to the youth to be law abiding and submit themselves only to constitutional authority since it is the only way that a conducive environment which is most needed for teaching and learning could be created for them to better their lives and country.
“I beseech all cadets and youth of mother Ghana at large to be peace lovers and make this firm resolution to join hands in the quest to maintain the peaceful environment for our growth,” he added.
Mr William Atta-Mends, Abura Aseibu Kwaamankese District Chief Executive, told the GNA that cadet corps throughout the history of Ghana has worked tirelessly to inculcate a sense of patriotism and civic responsibility in the youth.
“Today, the corps is recognised as one of our premier uniformed youth organisations, which seeks to develop cadets as caring and responsible citizens,” he said.
Mr Atta-Mends said it is clear that over the years, cadet corps membership in schools has grown judging from the turnout at the just ended camp.
“We now have cadet corps units in almost every senior high school in Ghana. I say it is a healthy development in our society because it signifies the realisation that firm discipline coupled with suitable military training given at the appropriate time and place could help create an orderly society.”
Mr Atta-Mends said: “Your new mission and vision encapsulates the commitment that the corps has towards its members to develop a mature social-emotional core, deep values and strength of character to thrive and grow as caring and concerned citizens.”
He said the success of cadet corps programme would be the result of the continued support and hard work of stakeholders including school leaders, teachers, officers, parents and volunteers.
