Minerals Commission commends mining companies

Mr Benjamin Aryee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Mineral Commission, has commended some mining companies for practicing safe mining.

He cited the Kibi Goldfields and Gold Bank Mining Companies as mining groups that were engaging in professional mining.

Mr Aryee disclosed these when he led the Technical Committee of the Mineral Commission Board, on a two-day working visit to selected mining companies in the Eastern Region.

He, however, called on the Municipal and District Assemblies to help curb illegal mining in the region.

Mr Philip Kwame Dugba, Production Manager of Kibi Goldfields, said the processing equipment being used by the company was designed and constructed by Ghanaian engineers and technicians.

He said the company was applying alluvia mining and was not using chemicals in mining.

Mr Dugba said the water use in the process was recycled and not allowed to flow into nearby water bodies.

Mr Dugba said the company would establish a nursery for citrus, cocoa and oil palm to obtain seedlings for planting on mining fields that would be reclaimed.

The CEO of Kibi Goldfields, Mr Samuel O. Lamptey, said the company had honoured its obligation to the communities within its area of operation.

Mr Gordon Armaah, CEO of Gold Bank Mining Company, said due to good market for cassava in the area, some land owners wanted the company to turn their reclaimed sites into cassava farms.
