Education Minister pleads for funds to develop sports
The 28th Inter-Schools and Colleges Sports competition has opened in Kumasi with a plea to the private sector to invest in sports development.
Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Education, made a case for strong private sector involvement to shore up the inadequate budgetary allocation for sports.
‘What comes in from the Government is not sufficient to meet the demands and challenges of the about 30 sports associations in the country,’ she said.
She said such partnership remains the only way to adequately finance the various disciplines to put them in good stead for international laurels.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the need for discipline among athletes, cautioning against cheating. ‘You should avoid performance-enhancing drugs and other substances that could ruin your careers.’
About 1,500 student athletes have gathered at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to compete for honours in athletics, football, table tennis, hockey and basketball.
