Court remands labourer over robbery
A Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Mr. D.W.P. Amedior has ordered that a labourer standing trial for robbery be held in police custody as the prosecution seeks direction from the Attorney General’s Department.
Kwabena Boakye is alleged to have raided a house at Twumduase near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with two others amid firing of sporadic gunshots and made off with jewellery valued at about GH¢30,000.00, cellular phones and an unspecified amount of money in both local and foreign currency.
They also took away three Ghanaian passports, an Emirate Air ticket, an I-pad and a digital camera.
The plea of Boakye was not taken and he would return to the dock on September 24.
Police Chief Inspector James Amekah told the Court that the robbery was carried out on last Sunday, September 8, at about 2000 hours.
He said Pious Wilson Kobea, a Senior High School student, and the only family member left in the house at the time, heard an unusual noise and before he could react, Boakye and his colleagues, carrying locally-manufactured pistols had forced their way in.
With a gun pointed at him they ordered that he led them to the bedroom of his parents, where they ransacked and took away the money and other valuables.
The prosecution said the robbers also made him to lie down as they fired gunshots to escape.
A formal report was subsequently made to the KNUST Police and Boakye was identified by the victim after his arrest in a different case.
