Thousands of children in Sunyani Municipality vaccinated

A total of 52,000 children have been vaccinated in the nationwide measles rubella vaccination exercise in the Sunyani Municipality, Mr Samuel Addo, Sunyani Municipal Disease Control Officer, has said.

He said even though the nine-day exercise, expected to end on September 20, had not covered the municipal target of 55,408 children, participation was highly appreciable as 94 percent of the expected children had been vaccinated.

Mr Addo was speaking at the inauguration of a GHC34, 240 sick bay constructed by the Sunyani Municipal Assembly for students at the St James Seminary and Senior High School at Abesim near Sunyani.

He appealed to parents whose children had not yet been covered to ensure that they were vaccinated.

Mr Addo said measles was the leading cause of blindness and deafness among children, and  that the disease had seen drastic reduction in the past years because of the vaccination exercise.

He commended parents and teachers for their support in making the exercise successful and appealed to them to extend such assistance to other health programmes.

Mr Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, pledged the assembly’s commitment to assist the school to improve on academic standards.

Reverend Father Alex Ansu Ebo, Rector of the School, said the school had no administration block and therefore appealed to the Assembly for assistance.

He commended the Assembly for constructing a six-unit classroom block for the school and urged it to complete the three-storey dormitory block under construction.

Mr Oppong-Ababio said the Assembly had sought GHC20,000 support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of a clinic in the area.
