UN Security Council condemns Kenya Mall attack

The United Nation (UN) Security Council on Monday condemned terrorist attack in Nairobi causing numerous deaths and injuries.

“The members of the Security Council extend their condolences to the victims and their families, as well as to the people and the Government of Kenya”, a statement from the UN Information Centre copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra said.

It said the members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constituted one of the most serious threats to international peace and security and that any acts of terrorism were criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

The Council reiterated the determination to combat all forms of terrorism in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.

The Council reminded states to ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism complied with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.

The statement expressed solidarity with the people and Government of Kenya in its difficult time.

The Westgate Mall in Nairobi was attacked on Saturday by terrorists killing at least 59 people and injuring many others.

The dead included late Professor Kofi Awoonor, former Chairman of Ghana’s Council of State, whose son was injured as well.
