Africa seeks partnership, not sympathy – President Mahama

Pres. MahamaGhana’s President John Mahama has told world leaders that Africa knows its worth contrary to what is wrongly perceived especially by the western world.

According to him, African has the ability to transform its economy to create new jobs for young people.

Addressing the 68th UN General Assembly in New York, President Mahama indicated that African develop with the help of both local and foreign investors who share its vision.

“Often the Western world wrongly assumes that we in Africa do not know our worth. We do. It’s not sympathy we want; it’s partnership, the ability to stand on our own feet,” President Mahama told world leaders September 26, 2013.

He continued “It’s not handouts we’re in search of; it’s opportunities.”

Mr Mahama added that Ghana, just like other African countries, is fully committed to promoting honest global partnership that is informed by mutual respect and reciprocity.

With time and the right opportunity, Mr Mahama said “Africa can make it”.

The Ghanaian President indicated that democratic institutions in Africa are growing stronger saying “It indicates that the balance of power in African countries is shifting from the authority of a sole individual to the more equitable process of a properly designed system”.

President Mahama stated “Africa is standing tall, walking confidently toward political stability, walking confidently toward economic prosperity, walking proudly toward ethnic and religious harmony and co-existence.”
