Ghana commends Cuba for assistance

Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, on Wednesday reiterated the commitment of Government to deepen relations with   Cuba.

He recalled the good relations between the two nations, which dated back to the First Republic and said the link had inured immensely for the mutual benefit of Ghana and Cuba.

At a meeting with Mrs Fidelia Ricardo Garcia, the World Co-ordinator of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People (ICAP) who called on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra, the Vice-President commended Cuba for the immense assistance offered to Ghana.

Cuba has offered more than 1,200 scholarships to Ghanaians over the years to study in various disciplines especially in the educational sector.

Majority of the beneficiaries are serving in various capacities across the country, and according to Vice President Amissah-Arthur it has gone a long way to improve the economy and material conditions of the people.

“The Government and the people of Ghana will never forget the immeasurable support we have received from the government of Cuba,” He said.

Mrs Fidelia Ricardo Garcia is in the country to seek support for the release of five Cuban nationals in US jail for the past 15 years over charges of terrorism and espionage.

Accompanying Mrs Garcia was Jorge F. Lefebre Nicoloas, the Cuban Ambassador to Ghana.
