Committee to investigate operations of quarries

miningThe members of the Shai Osudoku Assembly have been tasked to investigate the activities of stone quarry companies for failing to adhere to environmental rules in their operations in the area.

Mr Emmanuel Anyemi Odoi Lartey, District Chief Executive for the area, has therefore called for the setting up of a fact-finding committee to undertake the investigations.

The issue came to light at an extra-ordinary sectional meeting of the assembly, which was held at the Guggisberg Memorial Hall at Dodowa, when the members raised concerns on the operations of the quarry companies.

They complained that some of the quarries were sited close to communities, causing environmental pollution through the blasting and smashing of stones as well as the accompanying vibrations, creating discomfort to the people.

The assembly members said some of the gas chemicals used in the blasting are harmful to human lives and besides, the firms do not fulfil their corporate and social responsibilities to the communities.

The DCE said after the committee had looked into the matter, a formal report would be made to the appropriate authorities, who handed the companies their operational licenses to take the issue up.

“We believe the safety of the people is paramount in considering the concerns raised, rather than the social interventions,” he said.
