Provision of quality education necessary – Educationist

PupilsMr Peter Kwesi Otto, Eastern Regional Manager of the Anglican Education Unit, has said the problem of unemployed graduates in the country could be linked to the notion of the free compulsory universal basic education system.

He said free compulsory universal education in the country may not lead to quality education as expected and that, quality education produces individuals who can effectively handle matters of concern within their area of study.

Mr Otto was speaking at a Conference of Managers of Educational Units in Koforidua on Friday to mark the celebration of the World Teachers Day.

The symposium was organized by the New Juaben Municipal Secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

He said Ghana needed quality trained citizens to move it to a higher pedestal, adding that, for the country to get quality education, it required that all stakeholders in the educational chain including parents, community, government, teachers, school managers and philanthropists need to take responsibility.

Mr Otoo called on teachers to stop the blame game and play their part to ensure quality education in the country.

Ms Esther Otoo of the New Juaben Municipal Secretariat of the Ghana Education Service (GES) called on the government to adequately reward teachers in terms of remuneration, provide teaching and learning materials and motivate them to ensure that quality education is provided in schools.

Mrs Rose Araba Kakrah, Principal of SDA College of Education at Asokore, said the importance of a teacher in the development of the country required only the best and the most intelligent candidates to enroll to become professional teachers.

She expressed regret that many qualified people opted for teaching only when they do not get their preferred white collar jobs.

Mrs Kakrah called on teachers to take advantage of the many opportunities for further studies to upgrade themselves to be better positioned to impart relevant knowledge to their students.
