Achimota College gets new cricket oval

A new cricket oval of international standard has been inaugurated on the campus of Achimota College, in Accra on Sunday.

The oval, which was constructed by Turf Techniques, a company with speciality in the construction of sports facilities was funded by Mr V.N Akoliya, Chief Executive Officer of BGC International, an Indian company with business interest in Ghana.

Mr K. Jeeva Sagar, Indian High Commissioner, who inaugurated the project, lauded Akoliya for funding the project and urged Indian nationals to use cricket to promote Ghana- India relations.

He noted that Ghanaians are peace loving and it is imperative that Indian residents reciprocate the gesture by contributing to the economic development of the country.

Mr Sagar advised the leadership of Ghana Cricket Association to take opportunity of the oval to promote the game among students to enable the nation to build a solid cricket team.

Mr Francis Asare, General Secretary of the Ghana Cricket Association said the oval has increased the local pitches to three, which qualifies the nation to host international competitions.

He said the Association is organising a coaching clinic for students across the 10 regions to facilitate the development of a good national cricket team.

Mrs Beatrice Tsotso Adom, Headmistress of Achimota College said the provision of the oval is paving the way for the school to become a sports village as the campus is already hosting a football and hockey pitch.

Mr Akoliya said his passion for cricket motivated him to fund the project and urged the Ghana Cricket Association to take the opportunity to develop the sport especially among the youth.
