Birthday celebration ends in tragedy
The 19th birthday celebration by a level 100 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) turned tragic when he got drowned in the Barekese Lake.
Gideon Afoakwa decided to dive from a boat on which he was cruising with friends into the lake, ostensibly to prove his swimming skills, but could not come out.
The lifeless body was later recovered by the police on Monday.
Police Superintendent George Ankomah, the Suame District Commander, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said it happened on Sunday.
The deceased had gone to the place with his friends to mark the day in style, coming as it were on the heels of gaining admission to pursue a degree programme at the KNUST.
He therefore decided to go on a boat expedition with his friends, a decision that proved disastrous. His friends reported the accident to the police, prompting the search and recovery.
Superintendent Ankomah said the body had been deposited at the Saint Patrick Hospital Mortuary at Offinso for autopsy.
They are investigating the incident.
