Sports Associations must be proactive – Minister
Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Minister of Youth and Sports has urged the various sports associations under the National Sports Authority (NSA) to be proactive to ensure development.
He said his outfit will support any association that takes the initiative to attract sponsors to improve infrastructure and enhance the capacity of sports men and women since the ministry alone cannot bear the responsibility of funding all associations.
Afriyie Ankrah, who on Tuesday met the officials of the Ghana Weightlifting Association (GWA) and members of the national weightlifting team, commended the management of the GWA for taking steps to lift the image of the sport.
He lauded the decision of the GWA to construct a modern gym at the Accra Sports Stadium, aimed at providing weightlifters with modern equipment in a bid to improve their performance on the international platform.
“This is what we expect from sports associations and I hope others will emulate their example, so we can all develop and promote sports in Ghana”, he added.
The minister also asked members of the national weightlifting team to be good ambassadors at the next Africa Weightlifting Championship in Casablanca, Morocco.
“Ghana is the star of Africa and we must excel in any competition that we compete in. You must also win medals at the championship because that is what we expect from you,” he added.
