We’ll stop recklessness on our environment – Minister
Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Samuel Yaw Adusei, says the government would do everything to stop the wanton destruction of the environment.
The disturbing level of degradation could not be allowed to continue and that the laws on the environment would be enforced.
He was addressing this year’s international day for disaster reduction held at Edwenase in Kumasi.
The day has been set aside by the United Nations (UN) to highlight the need for precautionary measures to prevent disasters.
Mr. Adusei expressed concern about the tremendous ruin of the nation’s natural resources including trees, water bodies and wildlife, bringing in its wake drastic and extreme weather conditions.
Devastating rainstorms and floods that had hit some communities were the direct result of the destruction of the eco-system through reckless handling of the environment.
He said it was time all showed good understanding and joined hands with the government to restore some sanity.
They should embrace tree-planting to enhance biodiversity.
Mr. Kwaku Aninkora Sie, Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), appealed for more support, by way of relief items supply, to enable the organization to respond to the needs of disaster victims.
