NRSC unhappy about road crashes ahead of Christmas
Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has expressed worry about the increasing road crashes in the country ahead of Christmas.
She said these crashes are “sickening,” and must not be allowed to continue.
In the past week, the country recorded three major road crashes, which claimed about 20 lives.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah was speaking at a training of trainers’ workshop in Ho for School Health Education Programme (SHEP) coordinators from the Greater, Central and Volta regions on road safety textbooks and manuals.
She said her outfit has intensified road safety campaigns, with task forces at lorry terminals and vantage points to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said road safety had become a public health issue and appealed to the participants to commit themselves to ensure that children were safe on the road.
Mr Emmanuel Keteku, the Volta Regional Director of Education, said in a speech read on his behalf that he was hopeful the collaboration would help schoolchildren to appreciate road safety.
Mr David Adonteng, Director of Planning and Programmes at the NRSC, said the workshop would help shape attitudes of children and teachers to safety.
Mr Sebastian Akyeampong, Regional Manager of the NRSC, urged the participants to device innovative ways to make the teaching and learning of road safety interesting.
The Volta Regional office of the Commission last year provided crossing aids on some major roads for pedestrians, especially schoolchildren.
NRSC statistics indicate that about 23 per cent of pedestrian knock downs involved children.
