Kotoko cruises on
Michael Akuffo’s 35th minute strike was enough to hand Premier League leaders, Asante Kotoko a 1-0 win over Liberty Professionals in their day ten clash at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi, on Saturday.
The cagey encounter saw the first half almost ending goalless until the midfielder unleashed a 25-yarder free-kick to beat goalkeeper Yaw Berko after the ball took a deflection off Liberty’s Tamimu Muntari.
The victory moved Kotoko to 24 points, fortifying their lead at the standings and Liberty’s third straight away defeat.
The Porcupine Warriors, recovering from their recent shocking away defeat to Kpando Heart of Lions, pinned down Liberty to their own half in the early exchanges with a swift attacking play.
With Yahaya Mohammed and Yussif Abdul Aziz tormenting the visitors’ defence, Kotoko scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute courtesy Akuffo after referee S.B. Bortey awarded a free-kick to the home side.
Liberty lifted up their game in the second half, but their top marksman, Michael Appiah, was a pale shadow of himself as he missed in succession the few chances that came their way.
